Who We Are
The Macedonian Society of Great Britain is a registered Charity in England (Charity No: 1044357), founded in 1989, with the aim of promoting the Macedonian history, culture and heritage of Greece. The Macedonia Society is the main organisation in the UK that informs and educates the public that Macedonia, its history and its heritage, are Hellenic.
The society is overseen by its Trustees and Executive Board, who are all volunteers. It is a member society of the Hellenic Centre and is based in central London, 16-18 Paddington Street, Marylebone, London W1U 5AS.
The society usually organises 2-3 cultural events and a fund raising event a year. Since its inception, nearly 33 years ago, our Society has organised numerous events with notable Greek and British scholars including Manolis Andronikos, Nicholas Hammond, Prof Dimitrios Pandermalis, Prof Konstantinos Vakalopoulos, Historian and academic Mr. Michael Wood, an Honorary Member of our Society, Mrs Bettany Hughes, Professor Paul Cartledge from Cambridge University, Professor Lane Fox from Oxford University, economist Vicky Pryce, Professor Konstantinos Fotiadis, Professor Stathis Kalyvas from Yale University, Dr John Leonard, Victoria Hislop, Dr Michael Scott, Sir Basil Markesinis, Mrs Katerina Peristeri, Barrister Jo Maugham QC, Dr Angeliki Kottaridi and many more.
History and objectives of the society
The main objectives of the society are to promote and preserve the Greek heritage, history, culture and traditions of Macedonia, in the UK. The first meeting of the founding members, was held at Mr. B. Papachristides’s offices in London, on Μarch 1989. Since then, the society has been active in the UK promoting Macedonia and in Greece with various charitable activities and donations.
